Extra support

There is a whole range of help for pensioners available through central and local government.

Some help is available to all people over certain ages and some is available only to those who need it. For example, Winter Fuel Payments are available to most people aged 60 and over and if you are on a low income, you may be able to receive extra money through the Pension Credit.

What is Pension Credit?

Pension Credit is a new entitlement for people aged 60 and over that was introduced by the Government in October 2003. Find out more about Pension Credit

What is a Winter Fuel Payment?

If you're aged 60 or over, you could be entitled to a Winter Fuel Payment to help with your heating bills in winter. Most people get these paid automatically, but to find out if you need to make a claim, you can call the helpline on 0845 9 15 15 15 (Monday-Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm). Calls are charged at the local rate.

Get the most out of later life

The Directgov website's Over 50s section points you in the right direction for help and advice available through Government and voluntary organisations.

It provides information and contact details for community and voluntary organisations, training opportunities and health and fitness advice.

More about other government help

You can read and print a copy of the Pensioner's Guide or read about a wide range of help available through central and local government and the Pensioners Guide website. The Retirement Guide is also helpful.
