Grandparents' Day is 5 October

The UK celebrates Grandparents’ Day on Sunday, 5 October. Organised by Age Concern, this day is an opportunity for families to say ‘thank you’ to the approximately 13 million grandmothers and grandfathers across the UK, who play an increasingly important role in modern family life.

Pensions Minister Mike O’Brien said: “On Grandparents’ Day I want people to stop and think about older people, especially grandmothers and grandfathers.... The number of older people is growing and we should recognise and celebrate their contribution. Grandparents’ Day is a great chance for us all to show our appreciation.”

This year’s commemoration was timed to follow soon after Older People’s Day on Wednesday. Both celebrations coincide with the British government’s Full of Life campaign, which aims to show the positive side of later life and recognise older people’s increasingly valuable role in society.
