Free swimming for over 60s
People over 60 will be able to swim for free in England from next April. The Government plans to give local authorities £80 million to make publicly-owned swimming pools free to use for over 60s.
The move is part of wider plans to get more people involved in sport in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics. The free access will be extended to under 16s, and by 2012 everyone will be able to swim free at their local public swimming pool.
In Wales, the Welsh assembly already funds free swimming for over 60s. Individual local authorities are responsible for their own pricing policies in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
