generationXperience UK Older People’s Day will be taking place on Monday 1 October. The day is a chance to celebrate the achievements of older people and the huge contribution they make to society, while at the same time tackling outdated stereotypes and affirming a positive view of later life.

Care Services Minister Ivan Lewis said: “The UK’s over 50s now have greater opportunities to lead healthy, active and fulfilling lives than ever before.”

Activities currently being developed for 1 October include:

  • regional music, dance and art events
  • new research on the attitudes and ambitions of the over 50s
  • launch of Department of Health’s Keep Warm Keep Well campaign
  • Help the Aged community heroes awards
  • new research from Jobcentre Plus on attitudes to older people in the workplace
