More Britons moving abroad
The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) estimates that over 100,000 Britons a year are leaving the UK and that 5.5 million already live abroad. Of these, twenty per cent are retired.
Australia is the most popular destination, with 1.3 million people, followed by Spain with 761,000. Around 112 countries have at least 1,000 British residents. As well as these permanent residents IPPR estimates that a further 500,000 Britons live abroad for part of the year, many of them in second homes.
