Hot weather tips

Enjoying the sunshine this summer? It’s good to make the most of the warm weather, but if you’re over 75 you need to be particularly careful if there is a heatwave. Older people are at risk of suffering from heat exhaustion or heatstroke, both of which can sometimes be fatal.

To stay safe when the temperature rises, keep in mind the following tips:

  • Stay out of the sun, especially at midday
  • Wear a sun hat and loose-fitting, cotton clothes
  • Take cool showers or baths and splash your face regularly with water
  • Drink plenty of water and juice even if you don’t feel thirsty
  • Avoid alcohol, tea and coffee. They make dehydration worse
  • Eat as you normally would, but try to include more salad and fruit
  • Ask your doctor or chemist for advice if you are worried
  • Check up on older relatives and neighbours every day
